"Sacro Afrorobotônico - the afrotropical robot" is the name of the piece customized by Anna Anjos for the TROYART project. Anna sought references in the Afrotropicalism, her personal project on mythology, African and Brazilian culture (Northeast, Indigenous and the Tropicalism movement of the 1960s/70s). The robot was housed in a chapel decorated by the artist, inspired by the traditional religious shrines in the Northeast.
"I was one of the illustrators selected to participate in the TROYART international collective. The idea is that each artist would customize one of the three robot models of the project, which will be exhibited in January/2011 in MuBE, in São Paulo. The Sacro Afrorobotônico, the robot I'm customizing, has as basic concept the Afrotropicalism, my personal project. I used colored sawdust and Montana spray ('Pure Orange') for the base of the body. The headdress was created from a piece of banana bunch and decorated with 'leaves' made of colored paper painted with Posca, as well as the straws. (The colored straws were decorated with patterns using as reference the indigenous tribes in Brazil and Africa. I thought about the structure of the straws together forming a type of heathenism flute, an instrument used in rituals by the Bororó, a tribe in Brazil).
I decided to create a shrine to accommodate the Afrorobotônico, for which I had as a direct reference the culture from the Northeast Brazil: the colors, Cordel literature and especially the religious look of the people from the Northeast). I used different fabrics to form the base of the shrine and decorated it with sequins and colored roses, some ribbons and dried orange.
This project is also, in a sense, a small tribute to Tom Zé, who was (and still is) for me the greatest Brazilian artists of the Tropicalista movement. 'Ogodô ano 2000' is, for me, one of the most compelling music of his work (and was compiled in his latest work, the Pirulito da Ciência). The passage that I quote below served as an influence to better structure the concept of Sacro Afrorobotônico: 'the excited science / will make the sign of cross / and will light bonfires / to appreciate the electric bulb.'"Crafts, Sculpting, Toy Design2012 .
